716 Local Music
BRAND IDENTITY DEVELOPMENT, EDITORIAL DESIGN, PROMOTIONAL DESIGN, WRITING
As an avid supporter of local music in my hometown, Buffalo, NY, I wanted to create something to help bands and musicians gain attention. Since there was a lack of organizations and outlets that promoted local music of all genres to many people, I created 716 Local Music, an online magazine, to help Buffalo musicians expand their audiences.
Each month I interviewed two bands, wrote one article and one Q&A based on the interviews, and designed the eight-page publication, which was posted monthly on Issuu. In addition, I developed the identity, managed the social media, and managed communications between participants.
The response to 716 Local Music was wonderful. After releasing the first issue, bands and artists, managers, and industry professionals contacted me for inclusion and I received great support. After several months, I had opportunities to publish extended editions, outsource writing, release a music compilation of included artists, appear on a local radio show, and interview individuals involved in various areas of the music industry.
To promote the project, I designed stickers that were passed out at local concerts and placed in coffee shops and stores.
To celebrate the one-year anniversary of the publication in September 2013, I released a free downloadable compilation of 25 songs donated by the bands I had interviewed.
In July 2013, a local musician and television producer extended an offer to write monthly album reviews. In later issues we acquired the assistance of several more contributors.
With writing help from two other members of the Buffalo music community, I published a special feature highlighting the top local songs in several genres.
In January 2015 I published the final issue of 716 Local Music. I was able to reconnect with most of the artists I had interviewed over the previous years to include updates on their music projects.
